Martial Arts

Hi! My name is Michael. I have been attending Moor Green for a little time now. I have survived a major stroke. I had my stroke on June 6th 2002, following 4 mini strokes in the same month of the same year, which to say the least devastated me as I had always considered myself to be very fit. After all, I had studied Martial Arts for 35 years and did 3 sessions each week, each session lasting one and a half hours.

I owe a great debt of gratitude to the Anrot team at Moseley Hall Hospital, in particular Helen (OT) and also Cheryl, Caroline (physiotherapist) and Nina (speech therapist), who not only got me talking again but also gave me back my independence. And Doctor Lucas (clinical psychologist) who gave me a sympathetic ear when things started to get on top of me – I had lost me mother and father in a short space of time and also a very close friend.

Most of all I thank them for giving me the confidence to teach my beloved Martial Arts again. I had over the previous 35 years studied 3 different disciplines of Martial Arts. Firstly, Wado Ryi for 11 of those years, with my then instructor Master Suzuki. I had reached Black Belt when he returned to Japan to further his studies, so I looked round for a new discipline.

I chose Aikido under instructor David *****. Again I reach Black Belt. Sadly, David passed away very unexpectedly. I then attended a Martial Arts seminar in London, which was attended by over 400 Martial Artists from all over the world. There was a demonstration of Choi Kwnag Do by a master whose name was JO Kwang Choi. I liked what I saw and heard. We were told that instructors would be needed to open schools around the country. I put my name forward and was accepted for instructor training under chief instructor, Robert *********, and European instructor, Nigel ******.

I’m glad to say I passed with flying colours. Then I found I had time on my hands, so for the next 2 years I sat down and formed my own discipline using the best techniques from the 3 disciplines I had studied. Thus was born Musado Kia Do, a very radical and new Martial Art. I presented this to the English Karate Board, who accepted and accredited my discipline, which has now been recognised by the World Karate organisation. I am very proud of my achievement. I am also very proud of my daughter who also studies Martial Arts and was used to check my sets, or Katas as the purists amongst you prefer to call them.
